In 1806, William Clark visited Pompeys Pillar while separated from Meriwether Lewis, as the immense sandstone bluff drew in Clark and his exploration party. After climbing the bluff, Clark’s crew spied Native American petroglyph markings on the bluff and observed bison, elk and wolves from the summit.

Get in your step workout by scaling the wooden stairs to Clark’s preserved signature in the soft sandstone of the bluff. Have a picnic amongst the cottonwoods at the edge of the Yellowstone River. Explore the impressive interpretive center, and then get your wiggles out by running through the river walk trails.
