Who is a Mountain Mama?
Mamas include trans women, non-binary people, cis women, and any other person who finds themselves identifying in some way with the incredible label of “mom”. Everyone belongs in our work – that means we strive to increase our justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and center these values in our work.
We believe all children deserve to breathe clean air, drink clean water, enjoy public lands and have a bright future. We recognize that this vision is not true today and that Black, Latino/a/e and Indigenous families have borne, and still bear, the worst impacts of environmental degradation. Every community should have a voice that is heard as decisions are made that impact their community.
Mountain Mamas commit to working both within our organization and our communities to honor and support marginalized individuals.
Why care about clean air?
Colorado has an air pollution problem. The Denver/Aurora metro area is now the 10th worst for ozone pollution out of 229 metropolitan areas across the country. Several counties across the state have also received low or even failing grades for air quality. Bottom line, air pollution threatens our health today as well as our kids’ future tomorrow.
Transportation, electricity generation, and the oil and gas industry vie for the top spot of biggest polluter in our state. The good news is there are many ways we can improve air quality and Colorado Mountain Mamas is working to make them happen across the state.
What else do we work on?
In Colorado, our priority issues are clean air, climate justice, and the protection of, and equitable access to, our public lands. We got our start in 2013 working to pass methane safeguards and in 2014, Colorado became a leader in the nation by doing just that. Since then we have only grown while still sticking to our roots of local actions that make a global impact!
More recently our members helped pass the Colorado Climate Action Plan, Xcel’s Colorado Energy Plan which began the phasing out of their coal plants, low emission vehicle standards, the Great American Outdoors Act with full funding for the Land and Water Conservation Campaign, a ban on flaring during oil and gas operations, and legislation to make sure Colorado starts implementing Governor Polis’ Colorado Clean Energy Plan. We have also helped defeat a lot of initiatives that would have only added to our climate crisis.
Simply put, when you put a group of moms together, we’re going to get it done.
